South Florida

Activities and attractions for South Florida visitors.

It all starts in the "Magic City" - Miami. A visitor here can choose from extremes in activities: from browsing the cultural and artsy to slogging through Everglades swamps and on to sports. At night, there is no end to the selection of clubs, restaurants and cruises. It has internationally renown attractions such as the Miami Seaquarium and the MetroZoo. The Cuban community's Little Havana and Little Haiti, a Caribbean-styled community, are great places to shop and eat. There are world famous hotels, resorts and golf courses. If you can't find it in Miami, don't fret, it will probably be within a 30 minute drive of this wonderful city.

For instance, a drive southeast of Miami will take one to Key Biscayne and on to the beautiful beaches and public recreation areas in Crandon Park. Don't miss an opportunity to climb the Cape Florida lighthouse in Bill Baggs State Park at the southern tip of the Key. Farther south from Key Biscayne is the Biscayne National Park. Virtually a water park, it takes a boat to get to most of the park's domain. Homestead, south of Miami by about 30 miles, has a small town look and feel. Although Hurricane Andrew ripped into this city in 1992 and forced the closure of Homestead Air Force Base, the downtown area is quaint and attractive. A jaunt southwest of Homestead places one at the Everglades National Park, a huge park that offers great opportunities for viewing Florida wildlife and ecosystems and allows tent and RV camping. Bring your mosquito repellant in the summer, though.

Going east from Miami ends as one enters the famed Miami Beach and the irrepressible South Beach. Going north from Miami up Interstate 95, one passes through and by some of the largest Florida cities. Fort Lauderdale is an awesome destination city for beach and boating pleasures or shopping, eating and nightlife. It's great fun enjoying a meal at one of the many indoor or outdoor restaurants lining the beach areas or the Intracoastal Waterway. Of course you can continue your South Florida tour north to the West Palm Beach area. Here you'll find that horseback riding, riding stables and Polo are an addition to the usual nautical fare of South Florida cities. To the east is the famed Palm Beach, hosting present and past estates of the immensely wealthy. Names like Flagler, Kennedy, DuPont,  Morgan, Vanderbilt, Post and Trump dot the landscape. While the actual viewing of one of these famous estates is quite rare, it is fun to catalog the automobiles driving and parked there.
