Longboat Key, on the coast and Northwest of Sarasota, is another in the chain of barrier islands on the gulf coast of Florida. The island has a small permanent population of less than eight thousand, mostly retired residents but because of its popularity as a vacation and "snow bird" destination, almost triples during the peak of the tourist season. This narrow, twelve-mile island, running north-to-south, is gulf beachfront on the west side and Sarasota Bay on the east. Fishing, boating, shelling and beachcombing are the activities pursued by the adventurous but the area has fine dining and is only a stone's throw from Sarasota, which has excellent night life and cultural activities.
