Florida beach vacations can be relaxing, restful, peaceful ways to spend your R&R or they can be a series of wild adventures day after day. Florida is a state rich in tourist destinations made famous most recently by the likes of Disney and the Space Center but for generations it has been the beaches in Florida that provide the major draw. Whether one sees the Sunshine State as a thrilling roller coaster ride or an opportunity for solace and seclusion, the seashore entices. With so many choices, finding exactly what is wanted for Florida beach vacations is not easy and the location will play a major role.

Of course, travelers have been planning Florida beach vacations for more than a century, although the early undeveloped coastline hardly resembled the beach areas of today which sport mile-after-mile of land fill, paved roads and bridges. Lured by tales of great fishing and white, sandy beaches, many early visitors to Florida came by boat, unable to reach coastal outposts, settlements and private holdings over swampy land routes. However, late in the 1800's Henry Flagler's newly constructed railroad began to distribute large quantities of vacationers to the East Coast. By 1912 his railway enabled travel down the Atlantic Coast of Florida, all the way to Key West. Luxurious hotels were built along the way, many providing the key development for Florida's fledgling tourism industry at the time. Americans flocked to these beaches. Settlements sprang up around the tourist hot spots, leading to some of the more famous Florida beach cities along the Atlantic Coast.

Today's Florida beach vacations can provide for laid-back visits in which peace and quiet and intimate surroundings fulfills one's needs; or those seeking more can opt for the head-banging, jaw-tightening surrounds where excitement fills every waking minute. The titillating, thrill-a-minute destinations of Destin, Miami Beach and Daytona Beach contrast sharply with the more casual, laid-back settings found in Mexico Beach, Sanibel Island or Siesta Key. Thrilling amusement parks, rocking nightlife and spectacular water sports might characterize the former where the latter are more well known for peaceful beaches, ecology and their relaxing environs. Of course there are blends of both and most of us want at least the option to have a little or a lot of each on our much anticipated, well-deserved Florida beach vacations.

Some come with the idea of relocating and may stay forever, their Florida beach vacations turning directly into Florida residencies. The lure of the beach, the ocean and Florida sun seem too much for them to resist, leaving behind families and friends for the promise of a new and different day. Many more, mired in the day-to-day struggles of earning a paycheck like millions of others, though returning home, may eventually find themselves succumbing to Florida's considerable charms.
