Hobe Sound Vacations

Big adventures, activities and attractions in store for you in the Hobe Sound area.

Hobe Sound is an inland city located in Martin County. It has an associated Atlantic Ocean beach, Hobe Sound Public Beach, just to the east on Jupiter Island. It takes its name from the body of water lying between itself and Jupiter Island, an island formed by natural bayous and bays and the dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway.  The 2001 population of Hobe Sound was about 11, 400 people, and the area is growing rapidly.

Hobe Sound has a typical Florida one-street downtown area, which is tiny but classic. Nestled on Bridge Road, it is as if it were protected in a time capsule from the heavy development that plagues South Florida and it is only recently that housing developments were attempting to come into this area. There are small shops, quaint boutiques, wood and glass in the old fashioned storefront look, with painted borders and colors to evoke a feeling of joy and pleasantness. The town itself is the attraction.

Hobe Sound has the necessary infrastructure and landscape, including bridges and train tracks to remind one of a small southern town. Driving along Bridge Road towards Jupiter Island you will see neighborhoods of typical southern Florida “cracker” style homes, some duplexes, but mostly you’ll see single-story terrazzo-tiled roofs on stucco-built homes that are moderately priced. The city's beach park is at the end of Bridge Road, which is a relaxing experience all in itself. To just drive down the tree lined, two lane road with the sun filtered by wide banyan and fichus trees that canopy the view with a romantic, timeless feeling of release, is special. A right turn from Bridge Road takes one toward the southern end of Jupiter Island on Highway A1A, passing some of the most expensive houses in the world. The area is adjacent to, and encompasses part of, the Hobe Sound city limits. It is an ultra-exclusive residential swath made up of the homes of the extremely wealthy.

Hobe Sound aims to be careful and keep its Florida scrub forests, the old 1900’s train tracks from the original railroad and other special landmarks, well preserved as seen in the different conservation facilities concentrated in the area. There are also several protected, dynamic native habitats near the Hobe Sound border. They present themselves as vital in the region as well as examples of the area’s conscious efforts to preserve the natural conditions of the region.

One big and active facility in the region is the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge & Nature Center, a wildlife refuge of 968 acres in two separate parcels. The beach area is a popular nesting site for sea turtles and the mainland site offers a nature trail and museum to promote environmental awareness. Another facility is the Treasure Coast Wildlife Hospital, which is a resource for information about the wildlife in the coastal region. Injured birds and critters live at the site. The hospital will arrange nature hikes at different sites in the area. Nearby is the Blowing Rocks Nature Preserve, a beautiful place to experience the beach in Palm Beach County. There are rocks along the shore in which the waves come whistling up through to create a water and sound show that is spectacular. The big draw, though, is just south of the city at the hugely popular Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The park has features and activities too numerous to mention including full camping, paved and mountain bike trails, horse trails, fishing, boating and boat tours. The latter are on the Loxahatchee River, which runs through the park and offers the Trapper Nelson Tour.

Water access to Hobe Sound via the Atlantic Ocean requires entry into Jupiter Inlet and arrival by way of the Inter-Coastal Waterway. Be sure to watch for manatees and no-wake zones! Also, water depths outside the Waterway may be shallow, so be very cautious or you could get stuck or sheer your propeller pin.

The nearest airport is West Palm Beach International Airport, which is easily located taking I-95 south. The signs are well marked with an exit from I-95 into downtown West Palm Beach that is designated and going directly onto the airport roads.
